This photograph of Garfield Place (Piatt Park) was taken looking west in 1906. Theodore Rosenthal owned the corner drugstore, and the Harrison House offered furnished rooms by the day or week. Mid-square, the Motor Supply Company sold wholesale and retail. This block was torn down for the Garfield Place Doctors Building (1923). In the background, at right, is the

shrouding on the pedestal of the statue of James Garfield, which was in the middle of Race and Eighth Streets. It wasn’t moved back into the park until 1915, when automobile traffic rendered it a nuisance. Covenant First Presbyterian Church, center back, still has a spire. Notice the perfect little foot crossing the street while the body blurs away.
